By god, has this man no shame?

Evan Williams

OK, now, one would think that even a preschooler could grasp this rather simple concept.

Which is worse: murderous, treacherous dictators and squalid living conditions, or...iPods and McDonalds?

I'm sure that Cuba's not alone: there are undoubtedly countless millions of suffering people all around the world (who live in places where America's consumer crap has not yet arrived) that would gladly switch places with Spur[ious]lock.

He's actually romaticizing the squalor and suffering of the developing world. What a sickening person.

Greg

People seem to like murderous dictators, at least wealthy and famous "socialists."

For some reason I used to really really like Rage Against the Machine. I just read an article about Audioslave playing in Cuba. The article said something along the lines of " they found out what its like to live in a dictatorship". Then Tom Morello gushed about how great it must be to live under a dictator since they have more music education in the place of "golf courses for the rich." MMM Hmm.

JD

Wow. I knew Spurlock was distasteful, but this verges on evil. Wonder if he's going to ask old Fidel about the firing squads for political opponents? Nah, probably not. Funny how all these people who gush over dictators a) ignore all the people who are literally dying to get out, and b) never move there themselves.

skirob

Damn, you people really don't "get it" do you? Talk about reading too much into something. Whew!

Stephen

How are we reading too much into it, skirob? What don't we "get?"

jim

Is it really such a big deal that someone might want to experience a non-commercialized, non-Americanized society? Is this necessarily an endorsement of firing squads, poverty and squalor? Come on, people, you're reaching. This whole site is garbage. You have too much time on your hands.

Sam

"Because you know after the day Fidel dies, the shipments of American consumer crap will come flooding in."

Substitute with:

"Because you know after the day Pol Pot dies, the shipments of American consumer crap will come flooding in."

or how about

"Because you know after the day Mao dies, the shipments of American consumer crap will come flooding in."

I'm a former 'citizen' of the Soviet Union, and I for one am terribly grateful for the fact that my country is now flooded with 'consumer crap'.

And how about 'consumer crap' like AIDS medication? Does Spurlock realize that HIV-positive people are rounded up in concentration camps in Cuba?

todd

I agree with Stephen,, this is reaching. The statement is made partially in jest, and its totally ridiculous to think Spurlock actually prefers that people be supressed by a dictator. It makes no sense,, you're site is committed to making Spurlock look like an insanely radical liberal, yet you make a post trying to paint him as someone who doesn't care about poverty, human rights, etc.

He is clearly talking about culture and not politics. I've been to Cuba,, and it truly is amazing to be in a place that doesn't have every square inch of extra space covered in advertisements.

JD

Todd - "This statement"? Which statement, Spurlock's? Well, not having been there, I can't say, but I wonder how you know exactly, unless you were there. And while I don't expect Spurlock to stand up and say "I believe in dictatorship!" (or to believe it), blithely ignoring the connection between the political situation of Cuba and the lack of "consumer crap" is asinine. He's talking about culture and not politics? Todd, in Cuba they are the same thing; that's a common factor of totalitarian states. Find out what happens in Cuba to artists who make culture the government doesn't like. I even agree with you about enjoying being free of advertising for a while (although I would not go so far as to call it "truly amazing"), because I find it fatiguing and intrusive. But when it comes down to it, I'd rather see a McDonald's ad than this poster: http://vedado.mysteria.cz/big_cuban1/0095.jpg. (Sorry, stupid typepad doesn't let me make proper links.) One is an expression of free people engaged in commerce, and one is not...

Anon

I think what Spurlock meant by his comments is that Cuba will be "ripe for the picking" (excuse my pun) for companies such as Dole who owned land before the Revolution and now will have a place to expand their operations, as well as other international companies that will take advantage of the formerly repressed people.

As far as Castro goes I cannot say that I support him, or any other dictator.

And about the AIDS medication, the only reason they don't have access to it is because we have an embargo on their country. If the US was really worried about the humanitarian issues with cuba they would have at least partially lifted the embargo to allow food and medical supplies.

One final thing. I've been to Belize doing sustainable farming work and I can honestly say I feel that they are no better off than the Cubans economically. A free market isn't neccessarily a blessing from above. I think once Cuba is free the US should let them form their own opinion as to what they want THEIR country to look like. If they want to become Democratic and have a free market fine let them. If they want to remain Socialist but reform the current structure of the government then let them. It's not our country. We don't like when other countries tell us what to do, why should the rest of the world be any different.

i truly think alll of your movies are a piece of shit not because they offend me but they are biased asssssssss hell, like in super size me that piece of shit. food can't sit in ya damn stumick for no fucking half a year, cuase you shew your food, and you have a digestive system you dumbass vegetarian. An mc donald's can't make you fat thats only if you eat it 3 times every day like yo dumbass self did you biased a bitch. so before yo lame bitch ass make another movie get you damn facts straight.Bitch

headspinning

I can't be as crass or use as poor grammar as "Mike". But this blog is as Mike calls Spurlock's movies: Shit.
I'm trying to figure out if you (the loser who props him/herself up with this blog) is A) Insane, B) Ignorant, C) Neo-America the Greatest, D) Repressing your latent homosexual attraction to Spurlock or E) (You guessed it) All the above.

Use the intelligence you have for something good. This may have started out with good intentions...but you lost that so far back.

Simon

@mike - Maybe you should get your facts straight.

Yes, mcdonalds does make you fat, infact, all food has the potential to make you fat, fast foods such as mcdonalds in particular, why do you think there is obese people? Do you believe that obesity is a disease of some sort? No, its genetics and lifestyle, you either have the fat gene or you don't, you may eat loads of fatty, unhealthy foods or you could exercise and diet properly. I believe you may notice that there will be an extreme difference in health if you compare someone who eats fast food regularly, someone who eats fast food occasionally and someone who exercises and eats healthily.

Also, i'm not exactly sure what 'shew' means, but as someone who can spell i'm going to take a wild guess and pretend that you said 'chew'. Food can stay in your body for a long time, your stomach acids will decompose it eventually, but not immediately, and foods packed with tons of preservatives will stay in your system because thats what preservatives are meant to do, they're meant to PRESERVE a product so that it can last a long time, because they don't want to be throwing away their cooked foods every day, that would loose them profit.

Another thing, i'm guessing by the fact that morgan ate mcdonalds 3 times a day for 30 days may suggest that he is not a vegetarian.

I'm going to have a guess mike, you're an american right? probably about 10 years old? weighs over 200 pounds already and eats mcdonalds every night, your mother convinced you that you're skinny and maccy d's isn't healthy. If you are, however, over the age of ten, then i suggest you go back to primary school, you have a lot to relearn. If you weigh under 200 pounds and the rest of my guess doesn't apply to you, then why are you getting on Morgans back? After all, you clearly have the brain of an amoeba and you obviously have some sort of anger against Morgans truth about McDonalds. I mean, come on, its a fact that 'FAST FOOD IS UNHEALTHY' 'BEING UNHEALTHY IS BAD' 'NO I DON'T MEAN BAD AS IN GOOD, I MEAN BAD AS IN BAAAAADDDD'

You little gangster.
